Thank you for your reverse advent items for the ‘Bags of Hope’!

Fantastic – with help from the community and local businesses we made 150 ‘Bags of Hope’ to offer out to those who are experiencing homelessness in our town! Huge thanks to the Marsham Court Hotel, Hordle Primary School, Arrowedge Pharmacy and members of the public who donated so many essential items!

For Christmas 2022, those who are experiencing homelessness in the Bournemouth area received bags of treats and necessities. These ‘bags of hope’ were being handed out to those attending HealthBus drop-in clinics.

The idea for ‘Bags of Hope’ came from Reg Chapman, a retired naval chef and HealthBus volunteer. By connecting with patients he identified that many needed essential everyday items such as tissues and toiletries, which most people have around the house.

In 2022, the ‘Bags of Hope’ campaign was promoted via social media as a reverse advent calendar. From 01-15 December 2022, we are asking the community to store the collect the items below in a box and then bring it to one of the drop-off points. Items included:

Warm socks, Gloves, Hats, Unisex toiletries (soap, shampoo), Toothpaste, Toothbrushes, Bio-degradable wipes, Mini Vaseline, Hand creams, Men’s/Women’s Body Spray, Hot chocolate/coffee sashes, Chocolates, Plasters, Dried fruit and colouring books.

Without a permanent home, it can be difficult to access healthcare for many reasons. The HealthBus team offers specialist GP and medical services at the point of need. They work in partnership with other service providers, such as addiction and mental health specialists, to help people find the support they need to move on in life.

One rough sleeper, Dean, said of the HealthBus service: “No one sets out to be purposefully on the streets.  Sometimes you face situations which just leave you broken and desperate. After lots of encouragement from visiting health professionals, I have found hope and compassion from those involved with the HealthBus. This service is a lifeline!” he added, “A much-needed refuge for those who are vulnerable. The staff and team involved with the HealthBus have saved and are saving lives.
