BU Media Students Tackle Homeless Unconscious Bias

Launched on 11 March 2026, Year 2 Media Production students from Bournemouth University received a powerful client brief from Deano, Sara and Jordan of HealthBus Trust. As part of the Client & Audience unit, students were challenged to explore the unconscious biases society holds about homelessness.

The brief aims to inspire empathy and change through a media campaign that challenges stereotypes, raises awareness of the realities of homelessness, and highlights the compassionate work of the voluntary sector, including frontline healthcare delivered by HealthBus.

Working in groups, students are now researching, developing and pitching digital media content designed to connect with a student audience. Using their creativity, teamwork and production skills, they will create video campaigns that encourage empathy, awareness and action. This week, they have been interviewing Trustee Myka about her lived experience and getting further insight into the challenges of what homelessness brings.

The project will culminate in presentations on 13 May, where each team will share their proof of concept. As future media professionals, these students are gaining valuable real-world experience while contributing to a mission that matters.
