AUB Postgraduate Summer Show 2024: Jamie Yeates features the HealthBus
Arts University Bournemouth’s Postgraduate Summer Show 2024 featured an exceptional piece of work by postgraduate artist Jamie Yeates, blending abstract animation with social commentary on homelessness. As part of the summer show, which celebrates the achievements of graduating students and pushes the boundaries of artistic disciplines, Jamie’s piece stands out as a poignant example of art’s power to provoke thought and inspire change.
Jamie, an academic with a BA (HONS) in Interior Architecture and Design, presented a compelling animated piece focusing on the challenges faced by people experiencing homelessness. This piece was particularly inspired by the narrative of Gail, a volunteer from the HealthBus Trust, who has been actively supporting vulnerable patients and helping them transition off the streets. Gail shared her thoughts on the work, saying,
“What Jamie has created is moving and impactful. He has captured the humanity of those battling homelessness and shown that we all need compassion, kindness, and love. I am honoured to have played a small part.”
Jamie had the opportunity to personally guide Gail through the exhibition, showcasing the animation in the university’s lecture theatre. He reflected on his creation, stating,
“Art as a medium can change the perspective and perceptions of social challenges such as homelessness. It allows for an open, honest dialogue about how we each connect with communities and how we can influence them for the better.”
Over the past decade, Jamie has become a key figure in the development of information modelling, rendering, and visual representation within the university’s prestigious Interior Architecture and Design program. His work specializes in combining traditional visual communication methods with emerging technologies like VR and AR, which he believes can transform the way we communicate complex visual narratives.
Having recently completed his MA in Illustration, Jamie’s work explores the intersection of traditional hand-drawing techniques and technological innovation. His creations seamlessly blend technology, human expression, and mark-making, reflecting his artistic journey that challenges perceptions and invites deep audience connection. At the core of Jamie’s work is innovation in portraiture, using simple line work and abstract arrangements to reveal the human form within its environment.
His contribution to the AUB Postgraduate Summer Show is a powerful reminder of art’s ability to humanise complex social issues like homelessness, offering a fresh perspective and inspiring compassion among its viewers. Through his work, Jamie Yeates has provided a platform for an important conversation, highlighting the role of art in creating empathy and social change.
